How the technology works - interpolating between a butterfly and a wave

From a ComfyUI workflow to a simple tool

I make a lot of experimental videos in Comfyui - a node-based interface for building and experimenting with generative AI workflows. ComfyUI gives you a great deal of control, but even a simple-looking result often needs a large node-based workflow of models, images, prompts and parameters.

Most people don’t need to see any of that. They just want to make something. I wanted to find out how much of the complexity I could hide. I wanted to reduce the barrier to entry of some of these interpolation style workflows I work in.

Designing around the decisions that matter

On the surface, I reduced it to the choices that matter creatively: upload images, drag them into order, then adjust a few controls.

• Motion intensity, from subtle to dramatic
• Image adherence, from creative to precise
• Style, aspect ratio and video length
• A seed, so a result you like can be reproduced
• Optional upscale

Technical parameters became sliders with plain labels, grouped by what you’re trying to achieve rather than how the model works.

The output

The model has to imagine what exists between two images, so the transitions are never entirely predictable. Often the in-between moments are more interesting than the images you started with. The controls aim for a balance, predictable enough to guide, open enough to surprise.

What I learned

Simplifying a powerful tool doesn’t have to mean removing its power. Often it means working out which decisions matter and keeping everything else out of the way. That’s the thread through all of my experiments: taking workflows I use myself, finding the friction and making them more accessible.
